Every second year, Morten Eske Mortensen is publishing the Myntpris Årbok, and the 2010 edition has just been released.
A few facts about these publications :
- The book reports only results from public auctions. - The books do include all results from selected auctions, held during the years 2008 and 2009 within the area the title indicates ( Norge 1483 - 2009, Denmark 1448 - 2009 etc. ) - The auctions selected are clearly marked in the end of each book. - The book follows the established structure of the leading catalogs, with references to Galster, Hede. Schou, Norges Mynter, Sieg. Rønning and Skaare. - Each coin offered in any of the observed auctions is reported with it's key-data. : date of issue, denomination, catalog reference, auction, lot #, quality, startingprice, hammerprice and final result incl. commission. - Since many of the auction results were achieved outside of Norway, all prices are recalculated in Nok. / resp. Dkk. for the Danish book.
A few frequently asked questions about these publications :
- Do the auction companies represented in the catalog pay the author for his work ? Morten Eske Mortensen is independent, and needs to cover his time and costs involved in this publication through sales of the books.
- Why can?t I find the price for 10 kroner 1964 in the book ? Because the coins was not sold in any of the auctions M.E.M is using as source for his report.
- Can I find pictures of all coins in the book ? No, the book is an index, connecting different sources of information - a so-called cross-reference. You will not find any information about the design, size, weight, metal, mintage, variants etc.
- Can I learn which coins were too cheap - or too expensive sold ? M.E.M makes no commenting statements whatsoever about the prices achieved during these auctions. All the book does is to offer the only complete overview of all sold Norwegian / Danish / Swedish coins during the recent two years within the auctions he is mentioning, observing. You may, however interpret the data and decide for yourself if a coin was to cheap or too expensively sold.
- Why should I buy this book ? Because it is the only overview about the prices achieved there is - a true reflection of the market-price. Please remember - due to the idea of this report, there is no room for an opinion, the wish of an auction company to promote it's company or offers. Where else can you find out how many Speciedaler 1844 were really sold in public auctions during the last two years - in exactly 32 auctions. It also helps you to get a very good idea about the value of coins you might have - it helps you to decide how much you are willing to pay for coins you might wish to buy. The Myntpris Årbok is information pure.
- Why are these books so expensive ? Because it is a huge amount of work invested in these books, and they were made in very low numbers. And since the books do not have any pictures, and other flashy features, they are not exactly bestsellers and mainly used by coindealers - so, in short - a lot of work, a huge pile of valuable information and very few people buying it.
- I understand the value of it - but does an investment of 875 Nok. pay off ? When you are buying - or selling for more then 20.000 Nok a year, you will easily find out that the book will help you to save 5 % - or get 5 % higher prices for your coins - because you have better information. Information you can find out yourself - if you invest the time and look through these 32 auction catalogs every time you are thinking about buying - or selling a coin.
